GES — 2 House of Culture

One of the most anticipated exhibitions to premiere at the GES-2 House of Culture in the heart of Moscow is Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson’s Santa Barbara – A Living Sculpture, a recreation of the cult-classic 1980s TV show and the first American telenovela to be broadcast on Russian television and the country’s longest-ever running soap opera.

GES-2 is a power station dating back to 1907, located in the center of Moscow, recently transformed into a major new cultural destination for the city.

Lorem Ipsum’s role in the performance required the tall task of staging, filming, and producing over 100 episodes of the show, live, in a single take, in front of visitors.

“Re-staging a fundamental part of the 1990s social and cultural landscape produces a collectively constructed, live history painting.”

– Francesco Manacorda, artistic director of V–A–C Foundation

We worked closely alongside Kjartansson for each performance, ensuring all of the artistic and technical elements necessary to complete each episode of the show demonstrated the drama effectively. Continuously re-filming episode after episode on an open platform for the audience turns each performance into a living sculpture, unexpectedly transforming over time. Santa Barbara. The Living Sculpture of Ragnar Kjartansson will be held at the GES-2 House of Culture from December 4, 2021, to March 13, 2022.
