A Trolleybus for the Mayor

A documentary about Yeltsin’s life, screened in the windshield of a Soviet trolleybus, represents the shared experience of several generations of Russian during the Soviet years.

Boris Yeltsin became the first president of Russia at the age of sixty. What was his life like prior to that? Screened inside a real-life trolleybus-turned-movie theater, this documentary tells the story of Yeltsin’s ascent from village boy to a member of the powerful Politburo that ruled the Soviet Empire.

President of Russia Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev check out the installation at the opening of the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center.

In the late 80s, even after Yeltsin became a Communist Party apparatchik and the mayor of Moscow, he would often ride a trolleybus to witness with his own eyes how regular Moscovites commuted to work.
